Raptor's Dance
Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]Raptor's Dance is a Class I Mark XXIX rocket-powered javelin equipped with a reactive spatio-kinetic anchor. Purchased for 350 points, it is one of the decisive tools in Tinea's combat transformation: the weapon does not merely extend her reach or increase her damage, but stores the resistance of her movements, redirects momentum through spatial tethers, and returns that stored force as sudden propulsion. In Tinea's hands, the javelin becomes a partner in motion, turning battlefield survival into a dangerous choreography of balance, recoil, flight, and killing.
Acquisition and Construction
Raptor's Dance enters Tinea's arsenal through the point-based purchasing system. The transaction lists the weapon as a Class I Mark XXIX rocket-powered javelin with a reactive spatio-kinetic anchor and assigns it a cost of 350 points. The same purchase includes a blueprint for The Long Hand long-range carrier missile and a 100-liter plug-tank of nanites that decompose organic matter, making the javelin part of a broader preparation for technologically enhanced combat rather than an isolated novelty.
The weapon's material logic is immediately distinct from that of an ordinary spear. Its shaft morphs under Tinea's hands, resizing and reshaping as her stance changes while preserving perfect balance. The weapon therefore responds to the user's posture rather than forcing the user into a fixed grip. Its anchor parks a shunted mass at the origin of each swing; resistance builds as Tinea moves against that tether, and the stored energy is released at the end of the motion, giving every strike an additional kick.
Operation and Quanta Integration
Tinea first learns the javelin through controlled slashes, stabs, tumbles, and flowing movement. Each action is initially an experiment in resistance: the weapon slows or loads her motion, then snaps forward when the tether resolves. The result resembles a spatially displaced elastic band, but the comparison also clarifies its tactical purpose. Tinea's enhanced strength and traction claws allow her to generate the resistance, while Raptor's Dance converts that effort into acceleration and leverage.
The weapon becomes more effective as Tinea connects to it through the Quanta. She senses how it will react in the next split second, and AI-I enhances the interaction between the weapon and her body. Confidence develops incrementally; rigid swings become smooth flourishes, and the training sequence culminates in Tinea dancing with the javelin. The relationship is therefore both mechanical and perceptual. Raptor's Dance supplies the forces, but Tinea's augmented cognition learns to anticipate them, making the weapon feel less like equipment and more like an extension of a distributed nervous system.
Combat Use and Kinetic Choreography
The javelin's first demonstrated killing sequence establishes its characteristic rhythm. During a controlled tumble, the spatial anchor drains energy from Tinea's momentum until the tether reaches its limit. At zero, the shunted anchors crash back into their receptacles, and the rebound drives her forward. She flips over a Four's broken body while the javelin's blades shred its neck, then slides to a stop amid crystal dust. The weapon's violence is inseparable from its movement: the kill is the terminal point of a stored trajectory rather than a static thrust.
Raptor's Dance also permits Tinea to manage several weapons at once. During the forest battle, she catches the flying spear in one hand while her tail wraps the stock of the 7.62x39mm bolt-action hunting rifle in silken bandages and secures it against her back. As she continues fighting with the javelin, the Myriad launches nanite missiles; Tinea redirects one by hand, and Tynea reorients it toward its target. With both hands available for combat, Tinea drives the blade through a Four's heart, spinning clockwise until the weapon exits through the creature's back and sheds its spent blade layer like dust.
The javelin's mobility supports increasingly extreme maneuvers. Tinea is pulled from a twisting dive into a bladed pirouette by the weapon's engines, landing on traction claws while maintaining control through the leverage of her weight. In another movement, a tether snaps shut and the impact of a shunted mass rotates her body around its core, allowing the blades to tear through Antithesis on both sides. She then pushes across the ground in a low tumbling arc, cutting through the spines of a dozen Threes while the plasma torch on her tail creates a dense fog of oxygen and water mist that conceals her from alien eyes.
The weapon is equally dangerous at range. After the Antithesis in the clearing rise again, Tinea throws Raptor's Dance at a separated Four. Dream training governs the throw: her hips establish the pace and low fulcrum, her torso follows like the first limb of a trebuchet, and her arm accelerates around the high fulcrum before her fingers release the javelin at maximum velocity. Across roughly fifty meters, the spear parts the Four's forehead, penetrates beneath its spine and past its neck, and impales its heart.
The Weapon in Tinea's Last Stand
Raptor's Dance remains central when Tinea prepares for another confrontation. She stands and calls the javelin into her hand before planting it beside her while repairing the damaged 7.62x39mm bolt-action hunting rifle. Later, she retrieves it while studying the forest behind a Twenty-Two and the smaller Antithesis units gathering around it. The red evening sky recalls the first incursion in which she became a Vanguard, linking the weapon to a previous threshold in her identity and to the repetition of battle as self-definition.
Tinea then uses Raptor's Dance against a Six, stepping forward and releasing it as the Antithesis charge. Its engines roar, and after the surrounding explosions she stretches out an arm to summon the weapon back into her open hand. The return occurs simultaneously with roughly two hundred explosions in the clearing; her shield absorbs much of the shrapnel, though fragments still cut her skin. The javelin's ability to leave her hand and return to it makes distance temporary and allows attack, repositioning, and recovery to form one continuous action.
Meaning and Narrative Function
Raptor's Dance gives physical form to the book's fusion of game-like acquisition, dream-learning, organic augmentation, and combat ecstasy. Its 350-point price makes it an item in an explicit economy, but its effects exceed the status of a purchased tool. Through its anchors, morphing shaft, expendable blade layers, and rocket propulsion, the javelin participates directly in determining what Tinea can do. It stores energy, delays its release, alters her trajectory, and turns environmental distance into a resource. The weapon possesses a practical agency within the larger assemblage of Tinea, Quanta, AI-I, Tynea, and augmented body.
Its name also becomes a precise description of the fighting style it enables. Tinea does not simply wield Raptor's Dance; she learns its timing until the distinction between dancer and instrument becomes unstable. Resistance becomes rhythm, recoil becomes propulsion, and killing becomes the final beat of a movement already underway. The recurring imagery of tumbling, pirouetting, whirling, and dancing makes the javelin the material center of Tinea's transformation from an armed survivor into a combatant whose body and weapon operate as one ecstatic kinetic system.
